On hoof to the roof at The Dorchester

I spent most of yesterday on the roof of the wonderful Dorchester Hotel in Park Lane, Mayfair, London – doing another day’s filming for the Eiger Safety corporate video.

The task I had to film was the re-fix of their famous Dutch Blinds after their winter storage and clean.  This entailed the guys having to abseil from the penthouse balcony, hoisting up and fixing the blinds as they descended.

Despite the weatherman’s warnings it stayed mostly dry all the time I was up there and I totally missed the torrential downfall that came late afternoon.  I’d go as far as saying that during the moments of abseil inactivity it was actually a rather pleasant day.  I took the opportunity to get one or two shots overlooking Hyde Park and the southern vistas of London (Battersea Power Station to my left and Wembley Arena to my right – and everything else in between), and some more abstract shots of the traffic passing beneath me along Park Lane. I’m not sure if I’ll ever use these but they’re there if I (or anyone else) ever needs them.

Not only was this my first time atop this hotel (no surprises there), it was also my first day filming totally mobile in London.  DSLR, lenses, batteries and other necessary bits in my backpack and a Sachtler Ace in its bag (along with a mono-pod) over my shoulder.  Within a hour of jumping on the Central Line tube at Loughton I was exiting Hyde Park Corner station on the Piccadilly Line.  It was then just a short stroll up Park Lane to The Dorchester.

It would have taken me twice the time had I driven and cost me (or the client) tons more money in congestion charges, parking fees and not an insignificant amount of petrol.

So – if you are looking for highly mobile videographer to shoot London scenery I’m your man!

Stock footage sale

Out of the blue I was approached by a Japanese company last week wanting to licence my footage of Woody (our cat) pouncing after some string whilst I filmed him at 2,000 frames per second using the Olympus iSPEED high-speed camera.  This was just some test footage for a review I was writing for Focus at the time.

Anyway, after some negotiation it seems we have come to agreement on the deal, so from April onwards viewers of one of NHK’s channels (Japan’s national broadcaster) will be seeing Woody in action as a kitten as part of one of their channel idents.

A nice little surprise – and good to know we have a cat who is going to pay for his keep for a couple of years at least.  The only down side is that he’s been unbearable since he found out the news. Woody – take that smile off your face!

Monday – or is it Moan-day?!

Had a great weekend and looking forward to an even better week this week.  But its not like this for everyone apparently.

I know us Brits can be masters of the understatement but some of us really do need an injection of positive thinking.  Just got off the phone to one of my colleagues and it was one sob story after another.  Nothing was going right for them – and it was everyone else’s fault.

We can all look at the negative side of things but where does that get us? I was supposed to be filming at Claridge’s this afternoon but it was cancelled late last night by the client due to circumstances beyond their control.  I was also supposed to be spending a day out on Wednesday with this client checking out locations – but they have had to cancelled that too for the same reason.  However, soon after this call I had another booking me for three days in April, followed by an email for a job in Central London for tomorrow morning (which I can’t do – but glad I had the enquiry) and another conversation with a client that might lead to a day’s filming on Wednesday.  The spare time today also allowed me to finish of another proposal which is now sitting with the client waiting their reply.

Hey ho!  As one door closes another one seems to open at the moment.
